“We watched this war maim and kill our friends, and then maim and kill the trust of American people in their leaders. This war has created within our own government the necessity for deception and distortion. This war has not stood for our historic ideals, nor aided prosperity and happiness at home or in XXX. You… have tried with utmost sincerity to give the countries of XXX the means to fight their internal wars. But history shows clearly that no outside power, however mighty, can regenerate another society or regime that does not have the inner will to maintain itself… we face our own war here at home against crippling economic developments, the crisis in energy and other public resources, and other serious problems. We will need to undertake strong action and strong debate under your leadership; it has never been more important that we act with good faith in this endeavor. But we cannot confront and resolve these crises while the United States continues involvement in XXX.”
